Best email marketing platform for Shopify in 2026: five choices by fit

Compare Shopify Messaging, Seguno, Omnisend, Klaviyo and Mailchimp by Shopify data, automation, channels and billing model—then choose for the work your store needs.

14 min read Published Updated How this was sourced

The best email marketing platform for a Shopify store depends on what the store needs the platform to do. For simple campaigns and standard automations, start with Shopify Messaging. Choose Seguno when the work should stay in Shopify but needs richer email automation. Choose Omnisend when email, web push and a paid path to SMS belong together. Choose Klaviyo when detailed real-time store data and complex segmentation are the reason to switch. Keep or choose Mailchimp when the team already uses its broader audience and campaign system outside Shopify.

Those are five different jobs, not five positions in one universal ranking. The tools also charge for different things: emails sent, opted-in subscribers, contacts counted under each vendor’s own rules, or a combination of contact and send limits. Compare the bill at your own list size and sending frequency before comparing the starting prices.

Best Shopify email platform, in short. Shopify Messaging is the lowest-friction starting point: 10,000 emails a month are included on Shopify’s Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, and it covers campaigns plus Shopify’s standard browse, cart, checkout, welcome, post-purchase and win-back automations. Move to Seguno for richer email work inside Shopify, Omnisend for ecommerce-oriented email and web push with SMS priced under the Pro card, Klaviyo for granular real-time Shopify data, or Mailchimp when an existing Mailchimp setup matters beyond the store.

What a Shopify email platform should do

A Shopify email platform should be able to use store data for four jobs: send campaigns, build customer segments, trigger automations from shopping behaviour, and report what happened after a message was sent. The useful difference is not whether a product can send a newsletter. All five can. It is how much Shopify context enters the decision, how much workflow control the team gets, which other channels sit beside email, and what makes the bill grow.

A store sending one weekly promotion needs a different system from a store coordinating browse, cart, post-purchase, win-back and service messages. Paying for the second system before the team can use it adds software without adding a better programme. Staying with the first after the workflow outgrows it creates the opposite problem.

The five platforms compared

US-dollar list prices and Shopify App Store ratings below were read on 22 September 2026. Starting prices do not buy equivalent capacity because the billing units and send allowances differ.

The Shopify App Store ratings, including the current Seguno review snapshot, are useful as current user-review signals, not as a capability ranking. All five sit between 4.7 and 4.8, while their review counts run from 728 to 4,515 and the reviewers are self-selected. The near-tie does not answer which data, channels or workflow a particular store needs.

Shopify Messaging

Built for. A store that needs campaigns and standard Shopify automations without adding a separate marketing platform.

Where it is strong. Shopify Messaging is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. Those plans include 10,000 marketing emails each calendar month. After that, Shopify charges $1 per 1,000 additional emails through 300,000 monthly emails, $0.65 per 1,000 through 750,000, and $0.55 per 1,000 above that. Only sent emails are charged.

The native automation set covers more than abandoned checkout. Shopify documents prebuilt email and SMS automations for abandoned product browse, cart and checkout, plus email templates for welcome, post-purchase, customer appreciation and win-back work. Abandoned-checkout automation emails do not count toward the 10,000-email allowance; the other email automations do.

The send-based price makes light, regular sending easy to calculate. Four campaigns to 10,000 recipients would count as 40,000 emails in a month: 10,000 included and 30,000 charged at $1 per 1,000, or $30 before the Shopify subscription cost.

Where it falls short. The simpler setup is also the boundary. In TechRadar’s Shopify review, the reviewer created a first campaign in 15 minutes using pre-built templates in what it called Shopify Email, now Shopify Messaging, but found the segmentation basic compared with Klaviyo, though adequate for simple campaigns. The review was first published in March 2020 and revised since, with pricing last verified in February 2026. Shopify also requires desktop to create non-abandonment automations or edit an automation workflow or template.

Start here when the standard templates cover the programme. Move when the store can name the segment, decision rule or cross-channel workflow it cannot build—not merely because a larger tool has a longer feature list.

Seguno

Built for. A Shopify-first team that wants unlimited email sending and richer automations while keeping creation, customer data and billing inside Shopify.

Where it is strong. Seguno includes unlimited sending and prebuilt automations on its free tier, which covers up to 250 subscribers. Its $35-a-month Standard tier covers up to 2,500 subscribers and adds multi-email custom automations, browse and cart abandonment, back-in-stock alerts, popups and enhanced reporting. Charges appear on the Shopify invoice, and Seguno defines a subscriber as a Shopify customer opted in to marketing email.

The combination is distinct from both adjacent choices. Shopify Messaging charges by volume but offers a simpler workflow layer; the larger external platforms move more of the marketing operation into their own systems. Seguno keeps the work Shopify-native while expanding the email toolset.

Where it falls short. Its price follows active-subscriber bands even though sending is unlimited. Seguno’s January 2026 billing guide says the price rises by $20 for each additional 2,500 subscribers after the first paid band. At 10,000 active subscribers, that published ladder implies $95 a month: $35 through 2,500 plus three $20 increases.

Choose Seguno for its operating model—email work inside Shopify—not because unlimited sending alone settles the decision.

Omnisend

Built for. A Shopify store that wants ecommerce email, web push notifications, forms and prebuilt behavioural workflows in one platform, with SMS priced under the Pro card.

Where it is strong. Omnisend lists workflows for cart and browse abandonment, price drops, back-in-stock, welcome and win-back, alongside email, web push, segmentation and forms. The free plan reaches up to 250 contacts with 500 emails and 500 web push notifications a month. Standard starts at $16 a month for up to 500 contacts and 6,000 emails.

TechRadar’s Omnisend review, published in December 2022, describes its ecommerce integrations as pulling product catalogue, order and customer-behaviour data through a one-click connection. That makes Omnisend a sensible middle path when Shopify’s native tool is too narrow but the store does not need the event-level Shopify data Klaviyo documents.

Where it falls short. The channel promise changes by plan. Pro starts at $59 a month for up to 2,500 contacts and adds unlimited email, advanced reporting, dynamic content and personalised product recommendations. SMS is priced as an add-on on Omnisend’s Pro card, from $0.007 a message; the Standard card lists no SMS. TechRadar also found that the editor still needed interface improvement, and lists pricing that scales quickly and reporting that lacks granularity among its cons.

Klaviyo

Built for. A store whose retention programme depends on detailed Shopify events, fast profile updates, complex segments and coordinated messaging across several channels.

Where it is strong. Klaviyo lists email, SMS, WhatsApp, mobile push, forms, segmentation, product recommendations, predictive analytics, A/B testing and multichannel flows in its Shopify app. On its Shopify listing, the free tier covers up to 250 contacts and up to 150 SMS/MMS credits, the Email plan starts at $20 a month for 251–500 contacts, and SMS is a separate plan listed at $15 a month for up to 1,250 SMS/MMS credits. Klaviyo’s own pricing page lists the free plan at up to 250 active profiles, which it defines as contacts who may receive marketing emails, and 500 emails a month.

The data layer is the reason to choose it. Klaviyo’s Shopify data reference documents real-time metric and profile-property sync, usually within seconds. The event set includes collection views, search, checkout, placed orders and separate ordered-product events with product details. Product views and on-site activity are tracked by Klaviyo’s onsite snippet rather than the native Shopify sync. That gives a team more raw material for behavioural segments and flow conditions than a basic campaign tool.

Where it falls short. Data depth creates reconciliation work as well as opportunity. Klaviyo says its Placed Order revenue is subtotal plus shipping minus discounts, while Shopify subtracts cancelled and refunded orders. The two dashboards can therefore differ. A team has to document which number it uses before treating either as the answer.

Choose it when the store can use the event depth and workflow control. If the programme is still a newsletter plus standard recovery flows, the native or Shopify-admin choices cover that narrower job with less system to operate.

Mailchimp

Built for. A team that already uses Mailchimp audiences, templates, campaigns or reporting outside Shopify and wants store data inside that existing operation.

Where it is strong. Mailchimp for Shopify syncs customer names, email addresses, orders, custom fields and some browsing behaviour. Mailchimp says all fields except discount codes sync in real time; discount codes sync every few hours. Mailchimp’s pricing help page places five audiences, advanced segmentation and custom-coded templates on Standard, and also lists multivariate testing there. But Mailchimp’s own marketing pricing table and its Shopify app listing both place multivariate testing on Premium only, while agreeing that Standard gets the other three. The SMS add-on in select locations and 24/7 email and chat support are already on Essentials.

That broader campaign system is the reason for this choice. It is not the clean-sheet pick for the deepest Shopify event model. It is the continuity pick when replacing Mailchimp would also mean rebuilding work that has nothing to do with the store.

Where it falls short. Mailchimp’s pricing page shows that its Free plan ends at 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, with a daily cap of 250. Essentials starts at $13 a month and Standard at $20 on its Shopify app listing; Mailchimp’s own pricing pages cap Essentials automation flows at four steps and give Standard up to 200 flows. Standard’s monthly send limit is 12 times the chosen contact limit.

The billed population is wider than an email-subscriber count. Mailchimp includes subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts unless they are archived, cleaned or deleted. Each Shopify store connects to one Mailchimp audience, and Mailchimp says existing abandoned-cart automations must be recreated when the Shopify connection is made. Those are billing and switching constraints, not setup footnotes.

How to choose

Use the smallest platform that covers the programme the store can operate now, then test the next constraint against a real workflow.

  • Need campaigns and standard recovery flows in Shopify? Start with Shopify Messaging. Its send-based price can be calculated directly from monthly volume.
  • Need richer email automation but want to stay in the Shopify admin? Compare Seguno’s subscriber-band price with the same monthly workload in Shopify Messaging.
  • Need ecommerce email and web push together, with SMS available on a paid tier? Compare Omnisend Standard and Pro using both contact count and send volume.
  • Need detailed product behaviour, fast profile updates and complex segments? Check whether Klaviyo’s extra Shopify events are used in named flows or reports. If they are not, data depth is not yet a benefit.
  • Already run work through Mailchimp outside Shopify? Price the contacts Mailchimp counts and inventory the automations that must be recreated before switching or reconnecting.

Run the calculation with the next list band too. A tool that fits at 500 contacts can become the wrong billing model at 10,000, while a send-based tool changes with frequency rather than list size. There is no useful “cheapest” answer without both numbers.

Klaviyo vs Omnisend for Shopify

Klaviyo is a fit when the deciding requirement is granular real-time Shopify data. Omnisend is a fit when the store wants an ecommerce messaging system whose entry tiers explicitly combine contacts and send allowances.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Messaging enough for a small store?

It is enough when the store needs campaigns plus Shopify’s standard browse, cart, checkout, welcome, post-purchase and win-back automations, and simpler segmentation is acceptable. Shopify’s Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans include 10,000 emails each month; abandoned-checkout automation emails do not use that allowance. Move only when a named segment, workflow or channel is missing.

What is the cheapest email marketing platform for Shopify?

There is no single cheapest platform without a list size and monthly send count. Shopify Messaging charges for emails after the first 10,000 each month on Shopify’s Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. Seguno charges by active subscribers and includes unlimited sending. Klaviyo and Mailchimp use contact tiers under their own counting rules, while Omnisend combines contact and send limits. Four sends to 10,000 recipients in one month would cost $30 in Shopify Messaging email charges before the Shopify subscription; Seguno’s published ladder implies $95 a month at 10,000 active subscribers.

Is Klaviyo better than Omnisend for Shopify?

Klaviyo is a fit when granular real-time Shopify events, and segments built on them, are the requirements. Omnisend is a fit when ecommerce email, web push, forms and prebuilt workflows matter more, with Omnisend’s Shopify listing pricing SMS under Pro and Klaviyo SMS on a separate plan listed at $15 a month. Their starting prices do not settle the choice because the plan allowances and the data each system exposes are different.

Should an existing Mailchimp user switch for Shopify?

Not automatically. Mailchimp syncs Shopify customer, order, custom-field and some browsing data, so an existing broader Mailchimp setup can be a reason to stay. Before deciding, count subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts that Mailchimp bills, and inventory the abandoned-cart automations that Mailchimp says must be recreated when the Shopify connection is made.
